Thanksgiving Day – No Classes
Black Friday Schedule:
On November 7th at 1:00PM, you are invited to a four week series of Sunday afternoon classes at Priya Pilates during which this unique dance technique will be further explored.
Contact Improvisation is a continually evolving, alternative form of dance. It has been referred to as a moving massage, social dance, sport-art, animal play, and physical dialogue. At it’s most basic, one or more dancers attempt to follow and maintain a rolling point of physical contact (such as shoulder to shoulder, back to back, knee to knee, etc.) in movement improvisations that involve giving and receiving weight, and working with friction, momentum, gravity and inertia. A dance may also involve no physical contact or spontaneously evolve into and out of touch. Quintessential is the practice of staying in the Now in responding to one’s own and partners’ movements and impulses. Music is sometimes incorporated, but more often not the dance is done in silence.
Contact Improvisation was started in 1972 by dancer and choreographer Steve Paxton of Tucson. Paxton was interested in experimenting with how the body could be utilized as a physical playground. He believed that even an untrained dancer could contribute to his experimental dance form, which exemplified characteristics of egalitarianism, equality, cooperation, and informality.
Exploration of contact essentials during the introductory classes will include: working with the physical laws of motion, stillness, weight, and gravity; falling, rolling, and lifting using minimal effort; internal and external sensation; being off-balance; having curiosity about the unknown; and more. Loose, comfortable clothes should be worn that allow easy movement both alone and with others.
Sedona instructor Pash Galbavy has been an avid contact improvisational dancer for over a decade. She has danced, taught, and performed in the US and Australia. She hopes to help cultivate a stronger contact dance community in the Sedona and greater Verde Valley areas.
The four class series will meet 1:00PM to 3:00PM Sundays starting November 7th through the 28th. Priya Pilates and Fitness is located at 2050 Yavapai Drive in West Sedona. Classes are $12 each or $40 for all. Call 928 284-4021 for more information.
